A large Korean study involving 25,439 employees found that work-related injuries were significantly associated with long working hours. The risk of work-related injuries increased with increasing working hours in a dose–response pattern in those who took insufficient rest breaks, while the risk was not significant among those with sufficient rest breaks.

The study concluded that it is important to provide sufficient rest breaks to prevent work-related injuries among workers with long working hours.

Even if an ergonomic assessment is not done, frequent and sufficient rest breaks taken by the employee helps reduce work-related illness especially while working long hours with the computers.

Rest breaks allow the body part in excessive repetitive use to recover thus reducing chance of getting work-related illness, especially when ergonomics guidance is not available.
